Plan one to three hours. An hour gives you the Avenue of Flags, the Grand View Terrace and a quick look at the museum. Add the Presidential Trail (0.6 miles, 422 stairs) and the Sculptor's Studio for two to three. Come in the morning for sunlit faces and, in June to August, before 9 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m. for smaller crowds.
How much time do you need at Mount Rushmore?
One to three hours for most visitors; add the Evening Lighting Program in summer if you stay for the night.

- Two hours: add the Presidential Trail and a ranger talk.

What can you see in one hour?
The Avenue of Flags, the classic view from the Grand View Terrace and a quick walk through the visitor center museum.
The walk from the parking structure to the terrace is short and flat. The 56 flags on the Avenue of Flags stand for the states, the District of Columbia, three territories and two commonwealths. From the terrace you get the full view of the four faces, and the museum below explains how they were carved.
How long is the walk at Mount Rushmore?
The Presidential Trail is a 0.6-mile loop with 422 stairs, the closest you can get to the carving.
The NPS counts 262 stairs down to the Sculptor's Studio and 160 back up if you start on the paved section. The first 0.2 miles from the Grand View Terrace to the viewing areas at the base are paved and wheelchair accessible; the remaining 0.4 miles are not. The Sculptor's Studio also has an elevator and dedicated parking for visitors who cannot use the trail. Some sources say 425 stairs; the NPS figure is 422.
What is the best time of day to visit Mount Rushmore?
Morning. The faces look southeast, so they are sunlit early and in shade later in the day.
Photographers aim for sunrise to about 10 a.m., when the granite glows. In the afternoon the light comes from behind the mountain and the faces flatten out. Evening has its own draw in summer, with the lighting program. In June, July and August the NPS suggests visiting before 9 a.m. or after 3:30 p.m. to avoid the busiest hours.

Around two million people visit each year, most of them in the three summer months. Late spring and early autumn give you shorter queues and mild weather, and the full summer program continues until 30 September. Winter is quiet and the memorial stays open, but some scenic roads, such as Needles Highway, close with the first snow.

Is Mount Rushmore wheelchair accessible?

Only to the parking garages, the pet exercise area and the Blackberry Trail, on a leash of six feet or less. Pets are not allowed on the terrace or the Presidential Trail.
